Liverpool have received the green light to restart work on their new £ 50million training ground – but doubts remain about whether they will be able to use it for the-2020-21 season.
It had been the club’s intention to move the first team squad to Kirkby, where the Academy is based, this July but those plans were put on hold in March when the Coronavirus pandemic caused construction to be halted.
The state-of-the-art facility was only a matter of weeks away from being completed but the knock-on effect of a two-month delay meant that Liverpool were initially resigned to staying at Melwood, their current facility, until 2021.
Jurgen Klopp, the club’s manager, would not sanction a wholesale move midway through a campaign and, as such, Liverpool had come to an agreement with Torus Housing Trust – to whom they had sold Melwood for £ 10million last August – that gave them 12 months ‘grace to remain.
Now, though, McLaughlin & Harvey – the contractors who are overseeing the Kirkby development – are gradually increasing the number of staff on the site and have implemented safe systems of work after taking advice from the government.
All future work will continue to be planned but McLaughlin & Harvey are assessing the impact COVID-19 on its ability to source materials and sub-contractors. Liverpool have not put a deadline on when they want work completed.
