The Electoral Commission (EC) has explained how a voter who tried to insert “foreign material” into the parliamentary ballot box at a polling station in the Asawase constituency in Kumasi in the Ashanti region was arrested during the voting process on Monday.

It happened at the Baba Lati A New Zongo polling station in the Asawase constituency and the suspect, named Sharif Abubakar, has since been arrested.

The EC Ashanti regional director, Mr. Benjamin Bannor Bio, at a press conference on Monday night, said the culprit was arrested for monitoring people at the polling station.

The EC found five ballots on him, which he tried to slip into the parliamentary ballot box.

The EC subsequently identified the five ballots as fake, which did not have unique serial numbers, a watermark, and the corresponding validation stamp on the back.

Explaining how Abubakar was arrested, Mr. Bio said that when he arrived at the polling station, his behavior gave him away, and therefore an agent alerted the president.

Bio said the EC suspects the culprit and his followers wanted to put him in the box in an attempt to discredit the EC processes.

“We were interested in the statement of the Honorable Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka, so we followed up because the Commission has decided to guarantee a fault-free election and therefore we decided to continue to find out the nature of the ballot papers, and determine if these certificates come from the Electoral Commission ”.

“When we got the ballot papers, we realized that the ballots that were found in that voter were not those of the Election Commission. It was something that someone could have printed to use and discredit the process, ”Bio said.

He said that the EC determined that the ballot papers, a copy of which it showed at the press conference, monitored by Graphic Online were “so light” in texture and faint “, they did not have a unique serial number, the colors were also “so dim” as well as the validation stamp on the back which was oval in shape different from the CE round shape.

What the CE has is round, but the fake was oval and the CE ballot has a watermark, but the fake was ordinary paper, Bio added.

He said that the EC system is still very transparent and highly verifiable and that is why the person was

Bio said that the EC’s systems are very transparent and highly verifiable and have intrinsic integrity and that is why the person was detected and arrested.

He called for continued trust in the EC process, as the EC was determined to ensure that the declared results faithfully reflect the wishes of the people.

He reiterated that he has already met with Asawase area MP Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka in his office and he [Muntaka] it has attested to the fact that the ballot papers were not from the EC.
