The polling station for city engineers in Greater Accra’s Odododiodo constituency was left in disarray on Monday when some voters reportedly forced their way into the premises.
Voters, who had formed a long queue outside the main center, claimed that Election Commission (EC) officials and security personnel were compromising the voting process by allowing people who had not joined the queue to enter the enclosure.
One of the voters said: “We came here at dawn to line up, but after hours of being here, the officers will just come and let some people in.
“The police are not doing anything about it; they are simply here looking without taking any action. They are not giving us the opportunity to enter, so we had to force our entrance. “
Both EC and security officials were unable to calm the agitated crowd that had lined up since the early hours of Monday, December 7.
However, after breaking into the station, several voters got into a fight with election officials until the police were called.
“The police cannot handle the situation here. This is Ododiodio and you know the situation here. The police are unable to handle the situation properly, ”lamented one voter.
A police reinforcement team from the Jamestown Divisional Police Center was deployed to the station to handle the situation.
The Odododiodio constituency is a notable hotspot during elections in the Greater Accra region.
Young people from the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the electoral district had previously participated in a violent confrontation that left 15 people injured in October 2020.
Jamestown District Police Commander DSP Alexander Tieku has promised that measures are in place to ensure an uneventful survey.
“When we entered we saw a chaotic situation. Some people weren’t looking at social distancing, so that’s what we wanted to make sure it got done.
So we ask you to come back so that there is some space. That is why we ask for reinforcements to help us. We have brought a lot of staff here to help us, so overall, we are trying to maintain law and order. “
