Former Manchester City and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has signed for AC Monza in Serie B, ending his five months without a club.

The 30-year-old official, who was a free agent after leaving Brescia in the summer following his relegation from Serie A, joins a deal until the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

Silvio Berlusconi’s team, the ninth club in Balotelli’s illustrious career, is currently ranked ninth out of 20 teams in the Italian second division.

But Italian international Balotelli has promised to do everything he can to get them promoted, and the club has the option to extend their contract if they get promoted.

He told La Gazzetta dello Sport: ‘I thank President Berlusconi and Adriano Galliani for this opportunity. I will do my best to help Monza get to Serie A. ‘

The club’s general manager, Adriano Galliani, added: ‘Mario is a good guy and even today in our interview I had confirmation of this.

After all, I repeated it: “Don’t trust flatterers. If necessary, you will listen to my criticism, but it will be for your good.” I saw the understanding in his eyes, the reaction he was looking for.

‘The turning point was the availability of Mario, but also that of (his agent) Mino Raiola, who resigned any commission. Then we began to negotiate, already knowing that we would reach an agreement ”.

Balotelli excelled at both Milan clubs, with first two successful seasons at Manchester City in between, but failed to replace Luis Suarez at Liverpool following a £ 16 million transfer.

The Palermo-born forward won three Serie A and Champions League titles at Inter Milan, and the Premier League and FA Cup at Manchester City.

He trained with a fourth division semi-professional team after leaving Brescia and was linked with Barnsley and Vasco de Gama del Championship.

Sportsmail reported last month that his former coach and current Italy coach Roberto Mancini said he was “sorry” to see the talented forward struggle to find a club.

Balotelli, who will wear jersey number 45, joins former Barcelona midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng on the Lombardy side, who will play against Venice on Friday.
