Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris says José Mourinho provides teams with the technical knowledge, or know-how in French, to win titles.
Spurs, who fell to second in the table after Chelsea beat Leeds, face Arsenal in the North London derby on Sunday with mounting expectations that they can fight for the title.
And Lloris says Mourinho, who won three Premier League titles with Chelsea, two Serie A titles in Italy with Inter, two Portugal titles with Porto and La Liga with Real Madrid, as well as two trophies of the Champions League, is the added ingredient that will ensure Spurs will be competitive.
He said: ‘The only thing that can help us is the savoir-faire of José Mourinho, with his experience. Of course you need the best of each player in the dressing room but also in the planning of the matches, he knows where we are going.
‘It’s important to stay focused on every game, every training session. This is José Mourinho’s style, right? His team is used to playing with a very solid block. He always brings out the best in his offensive players but at the same time he needs a good organization, a good team balance.
And we try to all work together in the same way. Behind every great team, the main leader is the coach and then the players must respond to the demands of the coach and staff and perform on the field in the best way possible.
‘It’s too early to talk about it [the title] but he has the ability to talk about it. He is a winner. His motivation every day is to win and try to share this approach with his players and try to bring everyone together in the same way.
‘Last season was difficult. It was like a transition between Mauricio Pochettino’s time and the new era with José and this season, albeit a strange season with little time to prepare for the season.
‘We understand the demands and we just try to go match by match. We have a competitive team, we have a lot of talented players on the team and then the only answer is to show it on the field.
“Every time we have to show that we are a competitive team, we have to do it. How it was against City, how it was against Chelsea, how it will be in the next game [against Arsenal].
“It is true that some clubs are more challenging than us: Man City, Liverpool, the clubs that are used to winning the Premier League in recent years. Chelsea too.
“But it doesn’t mean we don’t have ambition, it doesn’t mean we don’t have the motivation. Like I said before, it’s too early to talk about that. We just want to enjoy the moment, move on, maintain consistency in our performances. ”
