Barcelona’s miserable run continued as Cádiz claimed another big scalp with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
The Blaugrana are now winless in four as visitors in LaLiga, their worst streak since May 2008, and a terrible defensive confusion endowed the three points to surprise Cádiz.
Álvaro Giménez scored a tough and controversial first game with just eight minutes played, but the promoted team, which enjoyed an impressive win at Real Madrid earlier this season, was held back by Pedro Alcalá’s goal before the hour.
Rather than protect his point, Cádiz rallied and was rewarded when veteran substitute Álvaro Negredo took possession of Marc-Andre ter Stegen to restore home advantage 44 seconds after his introduction.
Barça had 81 percent possession, but couldn’t beat the spirited hosts, who moved fifth as Ronald Koeman’s team fell 12 points off the pace set by Atlético de Madrid.
Cádiz had splashed Madrid’s goal in early October to stun the champions, taking the lead with his seventh effort in 16 minutes, but his only shot in the first half proved to be enough to lead in interval this time.
Oscar Mingueza went to the ground in a fight with Marcos Mauro from a corner and recovered only to direct a header towards his own goal, with a save from Ter Stegen that fell kindly for Giménez to crash into the net from the goal line .
Barça appealed in vain for a foul but responded with force and Lionel Messi began to pull the strings. He set off a play that saw Philippe Coutinho shoot from an acute angle, before feeding Martin Braithwaite for a low shot that was deflected by goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma’s boot.
Mingueza and Coutinho were replaced at halftime, with Pedri and Ousmane Dembélé introduced, but Barça still required a slice of fortune to tie when a low center from Jordi Alba hit Alcalá, instead of Mauro, and Ledesma wrong in his first post. .
The hard work of the blaugrana was undone quickly. Clement Lenglet was unable to control a routine throw-in down the left and the ball ran towards Ter Stegen, who Negredo charged before evading a desperate challenge from Frenkie de Jong to enter the net.
Sergino Dest deviated from a promising position when Barça pressed again, although Ivan Alejo and Bobby Adekanye missed the last chances to increase the margin of victory.
