A video circulates on social networks that has also attracted the attention of traditional media since Tuesday, December 2, in which it is alleged that the country’s president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has indulged in some acts of corruption .
The video captures a lady and a gentleman in Akufo-Addo’s office giving him a brown envelope containing a quantity of money. In the video, a voice was heard that some T-shirts were added to the money to help the campaign of then-candidate Akufo-Addo.
On Wednesday, December 3, 2020, the largest opposition party, the Democratic National Congress, called a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Accra insisting that the president was corrupt using said video as evidence.
In reaction to the accusation in Ghana Nie of Atinka TV, the National Organizer of the PNP, Sammy Awuku described the accusation as unfounded. Awuku, popularly known as Boys Abre, said that this amount was 40,000 GHC but not 40,000 dollars as alleged by the NDC.
Once again, he said, the money and the shirts were given to Nana, the then PNP presidential candidate in October 2016 to support her campaign. This, according to Sammy Awuku, is normal in politics during campaign seasons.
Citing himself as an example, he said, when he was campaigning for power, some people gave him money to support his campaign, and that doesn’t mean those people were bribing him. He said that all politicians have received donations to support his campaign before, and that does not make them corrupt.
Awuku hinted, even if they take any action on the impeachment, it will be after the election. “Even if the process starts now before we bring our case to court, the elections would be over. Again, a lot of attention is on the elections, so even if there is something, let’s see after the elections, “he said.
