The Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress of the Opposition (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has urged security personnel who would be deployed to polling stations across the country to demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
He said the elections on December 7, 2020 will be free and fair when police and military officials are fair and firm.
He revealed this at a press conference at the NDC headquarters in Accra on Thursday and alleged that some members of the security staff were asked to intimidate voters in the NDC strongholds. He therefore urged all electorates in the Volta and Oti regions to resist any form of intimidation on Election Day by police officers or any security officer.
Ahead of the presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2020, the NDC has said that its collected intelligence indicates that the government has sponsored some individuals within the security forces who will be deployed on Election Day to transport constituencies in the regions that are perceived as Strengths of the NDC. .
He said it is “the duty of the officers to rise to the occasion and restore the dignity of their profession” by resisting any outside force within the government to intimidate the electorates.
“Security is supposed to protect the ballot,” Ankrah stated, warning officials from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Immigration Service and officials from other security services to do the right thing. and do not be agents of trouble or fear.
The former minister said that volunteers should not be terrorized, but “work and escape the leadership of the corrupt and evil Akufo-Addo” by voting against him.
“The president is Akufo-Addo, he is the current King Agorkoli,” he said and reminded the people of the Volta region that they must be smart and brave while their ancestors escaped the evil of King Agorkoli in Benin.
CARE Ghana warns
This comes after a civil society organization, Care for Free and Fair Elections (CARE Ghana), warned the Election Commission and security services to desist from engaging in bad practices that will disenfranchise some Ghanaians on election day.
At a press conference on Wednesday, CARE Ghana Executive Secretary David Kumi Addo indicated that there is much turmoil and confusion among the security services over some dubious roles to play on Monday.
“We have been reliably informed that some leaders of the security services have ordered security officers stationed in opposition strongholds on Election Day to intimidate and harass innocent voters, as was done in exercise register. While many regular and well-trained security officers feel that their duty and responsibility does not allow them to create confusion but to protect lives, members and property, others are willing to comply. This development is creating some anxiety and misunderstandings among security officials and seriously affects morale. “
Kumi Addo said that “we would like to ask all security officers to ignore this directive and assure them of our support and that of the general public. We encourage you to positively challenge this perverse and devastating directive from your superiors. “
He urged that “our uniformed men must know that the ammunition delivered to them is the property of the Ghanaian people, acquired with the taxpayer’s money in order to protect and not harm or maim the citizenry; protect our young democracy, not subvert it; to maintain law, peace and order, but not to create anarchy, disorder and insecurity. “
