Bono East Regional Police have recovered GH ¢ 234,000 of the more than GH ¢ 600,000 that were stolen after a bullion van transporting the money to an undisclosed destination by the absa bank was attacked.

Police also arrested a person after he claimed ownership of the vehicle that was used by the thieves.

The robbery occurred on Friday night in Mmaampehia, near Techiman, in the Bono Este Region.

Bono Este Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Djan Kyere, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic on Sunday, said the robbers, armed with firearms, attacked the van around 5.30 pm, injuring the driver and the police. aboard before fleeing with loot.

In the van, with registration number GT 3181-W, was the driver, identified as Frank Agyeman, lance corporal Yussif Abubakar, and a bank official, Sampson Kofi Sarfo.

According to him, the thieves left GH ¢ 39,000 in the van, while GH ¢ 195,000 was recovered when the vehicle used by the thieves was intercepted in Akomadan in the Ashanti region.

Share loot

After attacking the vehicle and fleeing with the money, Mr. Kyere explained, the thieves rushed over and then parked their wagon in front of an incomplete gari processing factory in Akomadan to share their loot.

He said that while they were sharing the money, they were seen by a police guard, who asked for reinforcement for his arrest.

He said that when the police reinforcement arrived, the thieves had escaped, leaving behind the car they had used for the robbery.

During a search of the car, police found GH ¢ 195,000, a 3G rifle, and a bomb action pistol.

The thieves, however, left with the AK 47 rifle they had seized from L / Cpl Abubakar and the weapon they had used in their operation.

An arrest

Kyere said someone showed up to claim ownership of the vehicle used by the thieves and was arrested for questioning.

The victims of the robbery, who were rushed to the Techiman Holy Family Hospital, were treated and released, while the bullion van was towed to the Techiman Police Station.

The regional police commander added that the police were investigating the matter.

He said thieves were believed to be hiding in the Ashanti region.
