The family of former President Jerry John Rawlings has dismissed reports regarding the date of the funeral of the country’s longest-serving head of state.
The head of the funeral planning committee, James Victor Gbeho, said the family, in consultation with the government, agreed on December 23 on the ex-president’s funeral rite.
However, in a press release signed by the Agbotui family secretary on Wednesday, he said that Monday’s press release confirming the date of Rawlings’ funeral should be ignored.
Napoleon Kwame Agbotui indicated that such consultation with the family never took place.
“We wish to inform the general public that no such consultation has taken place, and as such, the old press release confirming the date [J.J Rawlings] the funeral must be ignored. “
He added that Anlo’s family and heads of state have yet to schedule a date for the former statesman’s final funeral rites.
“Information on the new date and details of the late president’s funeral arrangements will be passed on after extensive and thorough consultation with the families, the government and the state of Anlo to give him a proper burial.”
Mr. Agbotui appealed to the president’s office to ensure that Anlo’s customs and correct procedures are properly followed during Rawlings’ burial.
He explained that Rawlings was not only a former president of Ghana but also a chief of Anlo under the title of Torgbi Nutifafa I.
