The Election Commission says it cannot be blamed for turning away security personnel from its Special Voting Centers after searching their names in the registry without success.
At the Kwadaso Special Voting Center, the opposition Democratic National Congress had expressed concern that about twenty people had been turned away at 10:00 am.
NDC parliamentary candidate Erick Asibey told Ultimate News the situation could create a security breach on December 7, depending on his controls; all staff unable to vote had already been assigned service areas for the national elections.
“I spoke to the EC and they told me there is nothing they can do but tell commanders to change their duty station and take them where they are supposed to vote. We know that fifty plus one win the presidential seat, so if about twenty of them don’t vote, what can we do? I ask.
Meanwhile, the district’s election official, Thelma Annan, said the affected staff did not provide details or request a special vote.
“Most of the security personnel did not give their names for the special vote so when they come they cannot find them because we did not get their names to compile them for the special registry,” he said.
The reporter Ivan Heathcote Smoker indicated that at ten in the morning, one hundred and ten people of the six hundred and forty registered had gone through the exercise carried out under strict COVID 19 protocols.
The Kwadaso constituency has a considerable number of military personnel who vote in the constituency because it houses the 4th Infantry Battalion and the 2nd Brigade Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces.
At the Nhyieso Special Voting Center, located within the Police Training School, some 698 people were expected to vote.
By eleven o’clock in the morning some 250 people had voted.
The station’s presiding election official, Gabriel Osei, told Ultimate News that all of the people who were rejected had similar reports of not submitting their details to request a special vote.
“Some people came in thinking that once they are part of the security services, maybe they can vote. Meanwhile, they did not apply. “
Covid-19 handwashing and social distancing routines, as well as temperature controls, were duly implemented while election officials performed their duties.
