The National Union of Students of Ghana (NUGS) has said that the manifesto promise of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to fully absorb the fees for all newly admitted tertiary education students from the 2020/21 academic year is commendable.
The graduate student association said in a press release on December 1, 2020 that the policy is a step in the right direction.
The NDC announced that it has incorporated free tertiary education for students admitted in the 2020/2021 academic year into its 2020 manifesto.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, the party’s national chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo said that the proposal to update the manifesto was made by the NDC Education Policy Group.
Additionally, continuing students will pay half of their school fees as promised in the updated manifesto.
According to the statement, the next NDC government will absorb “the full tuition fees for Ghanaian students who will be admitted to tertiary institutions in the 2020/2021 academic year.”
“This policy is an enhancement of our commitment in the Popular Manifesto to absorb 50% of the school fees of all higher education students for the 2020/2021 academic year through the ‘Kyemupe’ policy, which will now apply only to students who continue in institutions of higher education. in the country, ”the statement added.
The NUGS said in its statement that it will hold the NDC and John Dramani Mahama, the party’s standard bearer, responsible for complying with this policy proposal if it wins the December 7, 2020 election.
With days until presidential and parliamentary elections, the NDC appears to be trying to overcome the free high school policy of the current New Patriotic Party (NPP), which gained ground in the 2016 election campaign.
