The Anlo Traditional Council has expressed outrage at what it claims to be the “total disrespect” shown to it by the funeral planning committee for former President Jerry John Rawlings.

The head of the Funeral Planning Committee, James Victor Gbehor, announced on Monday, November 30, in a statement that Wednesday, December 23, has been agreed as the day of the burial and funeral of the late president.

He said the family and the government are working together to give Rawlings a proper burial.

“The family of His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings, in consultation with the government, agreed that the date for the former president’s state funeral is confirmed for Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at Independence Square in Accra.”

“The family is working closely with the government on the finer details of the funeral ceremony and will communicate the arrangements in due course,” the statement said.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 30, 2020, the Anlo Traditional Council said that the arrangements mentioned in the statement are an affront to the customs and traditions of the Anlo people.

The council declared that the late president was a head of the state of Anlo and should be buried in accordance with the traditions and customs of the Anlo people.

“The Traditional Council of Anlo wishes to express in its strongest terms its utter outrage at the lack of respect shown to culture and traditions, customs and uses of our practices in the publication of the so-called declaration.”

“Our anger stems from the fact that President JJ Rawlings was not only a former head of state and president of the Republic of Ghana, but was also a properly installed Anlo land chief, whose unfortunate disappearance must be dealt with in accordance with the customs and traditions of Anlo “.

“It is necessary to bring to the public’s attention that the traditional council had drawn attention to immediate family concerns about how to proceed with the funeral arrangements and that it had met with them to obtain final information on the funeral arrangement.” .

Therefore, the council asked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to “ensure that the correct procedures are followed.”
