A member of the iRIS Research Consortium, Dr. Theo Acheampong has described the inability of a representative sample of Ghanaians to link corruption and its effects with national development as worrisome.
According to him, this explains why from 2002 to date corruption has never been a top 3 issue when it comes to factors influencing people’s vote in general elections.
His comments follow the iRIS Research Consortium survey of a sample of Ghanaians.
Speaking to Evans Mensah on PM Express, the researcher, however, stated that the current political poll showed evidence of increased interest in corruption-related issues on the part of Ghanaians.
“Respondents with tertiary or higher education rated the government’s performance on corruption as poor or very poor relative to those with secondary or lower education.
“It is yet to reach the top 3, but more and more it is becoming a hot topic,” he said.
Dr. Acheampong added that, according to the survey, citizens appear to have confidence in the ability of current President Akufo-Addo to better address the issue of corruption than his opponent, the Democratic National Congress standard-bearer John Dramani Mahama.
He added that the electorates believe that Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party have a better chance of developing the nation compared to the NDC.
“Akufo-Addo outperforms John Mahama in education, economy, employment, corruption, security and Covid-19, with the exception of infrastructure, where John Mahama does best.”
In his presentation, he revealed a 49.14% favorability gain for Akufo-Addo according to the survey.
