The government has outgrown specialized four-passenger quadricycles for Okada’s drivers and passengers for rent-to-own for use as public transportation.
Bajaj Qute vehicles, according to a Citi News report, were overtaken on Saturday, November 28, 2020 by the Coastal Development Authority (CODA).
According to the report, CODA Executive Director Jerry Ahmed Shaib said the vehicles were overtaken as part of the CODA Drive initiative to eradicate poverty and create wealth for commercial drivers, as well as passengers from Okada and Pragya.
“The CODA Drive operation will initially focus on rural and suburban areas in the six regions of the Coastal Development Zone,” the report says.
At the height of the debate over whether to legalize Okada’s business or not, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia proposed offering new cars to Okada passengers on a lease basis.
According to the vice president, Okada was a risky business and he was confident that the cars would offer them safety as commercial drivers.
The CODA initiative is also expected to help address road safety within the Coastal Development Zone.
The government has taken a hard line against the legalization of Okada’s business, arguing that its activities have led to numerous traffic accidents.
Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s main contender in the upcoming December 7 elections, has vowed to legalize Okada if elected.
