The government has warned the media and voters in next Monday’s general election to expect a lot of fake news in the last week before the election.
He said there was credible information of imminent fake and manipulated audios, documents and videos intended to confuse the Ghanaian public ahead of the vote.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic yesterday, Information Minister Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who had recently warned of the rise in fake news, said: “We are aware of the materials that have been produced locally and internationally to be produced this week desperate attempt to create panic and insecurity in the days leading up to the elections ”.
“It is all because some elements have realized that their election campaigns have failed and seek to return to the politics of scandalous fabrications, hoping to attack the credibility of the favorite candidates,” he added.

Consequently, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah called on the media to be exceptionally circumspect in the past week and not just give airtime and space to print any accusations.
He said that if the media believed the fake news, “they will end up being pawns in the hands of local and international elements who want to negatively affect Ghana’s democracy and elections.”
Mahama’s attack
The minister also expressed disappointment that former President John Dramani Mahama chose to attack state security agencies on mere accusations, without any attempt to back up the accusations with evidence.
He said it was all clear that Mr. Mahama was only there to stir up anti-government sentiments.
“Mr. Mahama recently accused the National Security apparatus of being responsible for the criminal activities of alleged secessionists in the Volta region. That a former commander in chief of the Ghanaian Armed Forces so desperately stooped and attacked the security agencies without providing any proof is so disappointing.
“If you have any credible evidence to back up your claims, your responsibility is to bring it to light, and not simply express suspicion,” he challenged Mahama.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah also warned the criminals who were being recruited to attack the participants in the walks and demonstrations planned this week to be careful, as the security agencies had already been alerted to treat such people ruthlessly.
