Eric Dier believes that Tottenham can continue to build and end their long wait for a Premier League title under the leadership of José Mourinho.
Spurs have been on the sidelines of success, but haven’t won a trophy since the 2007-08 League Cup, with their last league title in the 1960-61 season.
But after an impressive campaign so far, the north London team are sitting near the top of the table and could lead the group with a draw or win over Chelsea in their decisive clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
This season has seen a handful of great teams suffer indifferently, and without a clear favorite for the title, Dier is optimistic that Mourinho can end his sterile streak.
“I would say that this team is probably more pragmatic. I think we still possess many of the qualities that we had during that period (under former manager Mauricio Pochettino), I think we are all a little older, a little more mature and ready to do different things compared to when you are younger. He told Sky Sports.
“I feel like it’s a much more mature team, and the depth of the squad is not something I’ve seen during my time here. The quality that we have coming off the bench, and not even on the squad, is incredible.
‘That competition is definitely driving things forward, and I think that’s something we’ve struggled with in the past. You want to have your own self motivation, but you can’t deny that it is different when it comes to a great team and everyone drives each other.
“Definitely Mourinho is putting his stamp on the club, on the team and on the players individually. He wants us to be a representation of himself. Hard is definitely one of the words I would use to describe him and this team. ‘
After losing the 2018-19 Champions League final to Liverpool, the Spurs struggled to maintain form and consistency but have now made it through that period according to Dier.
‘Last season was a difficult time, even when the new coach arrived, it was definitely not easy. It definitely feels like we’re building something new, I feel like the foundation is there and it’s up to us to make it what we want it to be. ‘
Tottenham travel to Chelsea on Sunday and a draw or win will be enough to regain top spot in the Premier League.
