Do not rush to declare the election results – Mahama tells EC

Standard bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama warned the Electoral Commission (EC) not to rush to declare the 2020 general elections.

In an interview with veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt, Mr. Mahama said that the Commission must respect the law and follow the procedures established by the constitution.

“We are not declaring any results, we are not rushing to declare any results just to hit a 24 hour limit. The law establishes the period during which the results will be transmitted and that is what we must comply with. “

“Why are you in a hurry? Is there something we don’t know? ” I ask.

According to the NDC standard-bearer, the Commission has an ulterior motive in its 24-hour decision to declare the election results after violating various legalities.

“We have intelligence that they want to declare some results very quickly and joyfully. And if we protest, they’ll say go to court.

“The processes that led up to the elections have been flawed in many ways. The EC has violated its legal rules so many times. They say 30,000 names have been removed from the registry. Those whose names have been removed, we don’t know, ”he said.

Mr. Mahama reiterated that the long and tedious processes in which the EC will participate will make it impossible to reach a 24-hour target.

“They will be compared at the constituency level. The minutes after they have been signed will be sent to the Regional Collation Center and there, again, they will be counted again before the final result is transmitted to the EC.

“So you cannot come and say you intend to declare the winner of an election in 24 hours,” he said.
