Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang clarifies his position on Arsenal’s position amid criticism from Mikel Arteta

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has suggested there is no debate about his best position as he is happy to play “everywhere” for Arsenal.

The Gunners captain signed a new contract in the summer, but after scoring 29 times in all competitions last season, this time he hasn’t been able to get started.

Since scoring on the first day of the season, Aubameyang has yet to score another in open play, and his only other goal came from the penalty spot.

Mikel Arteta has faced mounting criticism for his use of the 31-year-old, mainly playing him on the left side of the three forwards.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been frustrated at times this season

In the tie with Leeds, Arteta opted to move him in, but that failed to stop the problems that have seen them record four blanks in five Premier League games.

Arsenal face the Wolves on Sunday and Aubameyang has suggested that while he has a preferred position, he is happy to help where he can.

“I play everywhere, I really don’t care, I don’t really care,” Aubameyang told our official matchday program. “Everybody knows where I prefer to play, but that doesn’t matter because I prefer to have many options than one.

“I want to help and I want to learn too. Because you learn every day even if you are young or maybe older, but I keep learning and I feel good everywhere.

Aubameyang’s penalty at Old Trafford is his only Premier League goal since opening day win against Fulham

“[You learn because] your movements are different if you play, for example, to the left. Sometimes you have to play more in your pocket to try to connect with the midfielders.

“And maybe it’s different with the forward position, like number 9. It’s completely different, sometimes you have to be wide, but when you’re a forward you’re more central and it’s really different.

“But I’ve learned a lot since playing on the left side.

“It gives me opportunities because a lot of defenders are drawn to the number 9. Laca and Eddie are doing a great job and so they give us room sometimes to come in and run behind the defense.

Mikel Arteta is expected to play Aubameyang down the middle against the Wolves

“Of course it has helped me and I am still learning as a left back.”

Arsenal have scored just nine times in nine Premier League games and Arteta has admitted that his team needs to find a more clinical advantage in their game.

He said: “It is true that in the opponent’s area we have not been as resistant and ruthless as we have to be and we have paid for it with some results.

“In UEFA [Europa League] we have found more flow, with more creativity in the final third, I would say and with more ‘let’s go for it and express ourselves’. But obviously the opponent some days is not the same, but yes, something to watch. “
