Jurgen Klopp launched a furious tirade about Liverpool’s match schedule after Pascal Gross’s controversial late penalty salvaged a dramatic 1-1 draw for Brighton at Amex Stadium on Saturday.
Klopp’s team took the lead through Diogo Jota’s second-half goal after Brighton’s Neal Maupay missed a penalty in the first half.
But Liverpool were surprised in injury time when Andrew Robertson’s challenge to Danny Welbeck was declared a penalty after Stuart Attwell used VAR to overturn his initial decision.

Gross converted from the spot, leaving Klopp sarcastically applauding the referees at the end of a disappointing week for Liverpool after their shocking Champions League loss at home to Atalanta.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson claimed that Welbeck told him it was not a penalty, but Klopp did not take the bait when asked if he did not agree with the decision.
“You try to create a headline again, at my expense, because that’s the way it is. If I say now that it was not … the referee whistled it, “said Klopp in an exchange of words with a BT Sport interviewer.
“Don’t look like that, try, always, all the time. Today I say it was a penalty, you are not happy with that answer, so keep your answers to yourself ”.
Liverpool returned to the top of the table as a result of their draw, but the champions are just one point ahead of previous leaders Tottenham.
Tottenham would regain pole position if they avoid defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, while the Blues will lead if they win the London derby.
It was one of those days for Liverpool, who also correctly saw the goals disallowed by VAR for offside against Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
Aaron Connolly was brought down earlier by Neco Williams in the 20th minute.

Maupay stepped forward to take the penalty, but his side-foot effort went off track despite Alisson Becker going the wrong way.
In the 60th minute, Robertson found Salah and his pass pushed Jota into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
Liverpool were seconds away from three points when Robertson went to punt in his own area when Welbeck approached.
Robertson’s foot made contact with Welbeck, but there were few appeals from Brighton before Attwell awarded a contentious penalty after consulting with the pitch monitor.
With Maupay off the field, Gross took it and shot down the middle to save an unexpected point.
THE CRYING OPENING OF EVERTON BOSS
Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti burst into tears ahead of his team’s 1-0 loss to Leeds when Maradona was paid tribute before all Premier League matches this weekend with a minute of applause .
An exciting 90 minutes followed at Goodison Park with plenty of chances for both sides despite just one goal, scored by Raphinha with 11 minutes remaining.
James Rodriguez and Richarlison had goals ruled out for offside before the break, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin dragged a great opportunity for Everton early in the second half.
But it was Leeds who had the most chances, as Jordan Pickford made a brilliant save to deny Patrick Bamford, while Raphinha and Jack Harrison failed to hit the mark with clear openings.
Raphinha finally made the breakthrough when he hit a low left-foot shot past Pickford from 25 yards to move Marcelo Bielsa’s men to 11th place.
A fourth loss in five games leaves Everton still in sixth place.
CITY CONTINUES THE DOMAIN OF BURNLEY
Pep Guardiola said his forwards have to score more goals after ending a recent drought with a 5-0 defeat of Burnley to rebound from the Premier League winning lane.
Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick, while Benjamin Mendy and Ferran Torres pocketed their first Premier League goals as City came within six points of league leaders Liverpool by one game short.
It is the fourth consecutive season that Manchester City have beaten Burnley 5-0 at the Etihad.
Meanwhile, City have extended their impressive record by winning the last seven meetings with Burnley by a combined score of 28-1.
Guardiola’s men had scored just seven goals in their previous seven league games to move to 14th place in the table before kickoff.
“We have to score, that’s why they’re here and they play up front,” Guardiola said.
“Especially for Riyad. Gabriel (Jesus) has to score, (Raheem) Sterling when he plays has to score goals.
“The most important thing now is that we have almost 21 players in shape; this is important.”
Mahrez was one of four changes Guardiola made after a 1-0 win at Olympiakos midweek that booked City into the Champions League round of 16, and he took his opportunity to start with Sterling in the bench.
The Algerian opened the floodgates at six minutes when Kevin De Bruyne’s pass swept home.
Mahrez then outwitted a sleeping Burnley defense when he held onto Kyle Walker’s throw-in before dancing round three challenges and shooting from the far post.
De Bruyne had a rare mid-week break and the Belgian returned to his best with another assist as Benjamin Mendy scored his first goal for City in three years since arriving from Monaco.
The French left-back produced an exquisite shot by cushioning De Bruyne’s cross on Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who made a Premier League debut to forget in the absence of English international Nick Pope.
After City’s struggles to score goals in recent weeks, the hosts made sure to cash in after the break rather than save their energy for a hectic upcoming schedule.
Torres has been prolific in the Champions League since his signing from Valencia, but the Spanish international finally opened his Premier League account with a good shot from the sacking of Gabriel Jesús.
Torres was then replaced by Phil Foden and with his first touch, Foden was Mahrez’s supplier to complete his hat-trick in an unusual way with a bullet header off the back post.
“Probably the last one (was my favorite) because I don’t shoot too many with my head,” Mahrez said.
“Of course when you play up front and you don’t score you have a bit of frustration, but we had to keep working, training to regain confidence.”
The VAR came to the rescue of Peacock-Farrell after he directed the ball towards his own goal after a good save to deny Jesus, with the goal disallowed for offside against the Brazilian forward.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche was angry at his team’s display as they were beaten 5-0 for the fourth consecutive visit to the Etihad.
“We didn’t show up,” Dyche said.
“You are still looking for a performance. We didn’t get it in the first half. You can’t let them put their noses to the front. “
