Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed shock at former President Mahama’s claims that the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) introduced the free secondary education policy.
According to the vice president, he is not sure if the NDC leadership is confused or assumes that Ghanaians have short memories.
Delivering a presentation on “a case for 4 more years to do more for you” on Thursday, November 26, 2020, Dr. Bawumia said that it is shameful that the party that bastardized the SHS free policy when it was presented by the president Akufo-Addo, now be fighting for credit.
“They said it was a hoax, a 419 promise. They said that if I had GH ¢ 2 billion they wouldn’t spend it on free SHS. They said the free SHS would collapse the education system.
“The NDC runs over 40 ads against free SHS. But the visionary Nana Akufo-Addo stood firm and has successfully implemented the free SHS policy.
“Today, the NDC says they started SHS for free! “Awurade Nyankopong!” added.
The vice president explained that although the NDC, in an attempt to prevent implementation of the policy, took the matter to the Supreme Court, that promise to the Ghanaians by the PNP has been kept.
According to him, the government has not only alleviated the suffering of parents, but the objectives set by the policy have also been exceeded.
“So far, we have invested more than ¢ 3.2 billion GH to implement the free SHS, which has resulted in more than 1.2 million adolescents being in high school now, waiting for better opportunities in life.
“For their parents and families, this has translated into savings of GH ¢ 2.2 billion. That is money that the state has put back into the pockets of Ghanaians throughout the country.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia took the opportunity to urge all Ghanaians to be aware of the misguided leadership of former President John Mahama ahead of the 2016 PNP government election so as not to jeopardize the progress made by not retaining the PNP.
“We ask you to give us four more years because our government, born of the PNP, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has kept faith in you Ghanaians, fulfilling the commitments we made to you.
“We are on the right track, having significantly fulfilled our mandate,” said the vice president.
