The Kaneshie District Court has placed an unemployed man, Godwin Kotey, in police custody for allegedly stabbing his cousin to death.

The defendant, a married man, is said to have stabbed Frederick Nii Okaijah Oko Sackey in the chest after a series of clashes over his girlfriend (Kotey).

He has been provisionally charged with murder and has been ordered by the court headed by Ms Rosemond Agyiri to reappear on 17 December.

At the prosecution, Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo told the court that Kotey lived with the deceased in their family home in the Salaga Market area, near James Town in Accra.

He said that in June of this year, the defendant moved from the family home to the Accra city parking area.

Furthermore, he told the court that, in addition to his wife, Kotey had a girlfriend known as Victoria Sabbah, who also stayed with him at his family home.

Inspector Teye-Okuffo said that Kotey, however, asked Sackey to put up with Victoria as she was moving out of the family home; but then he suspected that the deceased was having a love affair with his lover and this generated a series of confrontations between them.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, at some point in October this year, the deceased fired Victoria from her room due to the accusations made against her by Kotey.

He said Victoria went and stayed with Kotey, while Sackey also left the family home to live in the Accra Center for the Arts area.

The prosecution said earlier this month that the defendant had a misunderstanding with Victoria and threw her out, so he went and begged the deceased to accommodate her.

He said that Kotey upon hearing that, again accused Sackey of having a secret affair with Victoria, and for that reason the deceased again fired Victoria from her place of residence.

He said Victoria packed her belongings but left some at the deceased’s house and on November 23 of this year, around 11:30 pm, the defendant visited her and learned that she had left some of her belongings at the deceased’s house.

The prosecution said that Kotey confronted the deceased by phone about why some of his lover’s belongings were in his room.

He said the defendant then took a screwdriver and went in search of Sackey and upon meeting him, confronted him in an intense argument and subsequently stabbed him in the chest with the screwdriver and shot off.

He said witnesses took Sackey to Korle-Bu University Hospital for treatment, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The prosecution said witnesses later detained Kotey and turned him over to police.
