Lord Mahama making courteous comments to Nana Akuoku Sarpong in Agogo
The presidential candidate of the Democratic National Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, promised to address the recurring conflicts between farmers and herders in Agogo, in the Ashanti region.
He said the next NDC administration would build a permanent ranch in the community to house the herders’ livestock, who were mostly Fulani, to help prevent the destruction their animals were supposedly causing to crops.
Mahama said the ranch would be built on 20,000 hectares of land that the government would acquire with the help of local assemblies, chiefs and people in the area.
Durbar of heads
Making the promise in a durbar of chiefs and people from Agogo, Mr. Mahama said that the ranch would have all the services and would also include other amenities, such as residential facilities for the shepherds.
“The government will make significant investments to relocate Fulani herders from agricultural areas.
“We will acquire 10,000 to 20,000 hectares of land and turn it into a full-service ranch so that we can permanently solve the problems of conflicts between farmers and local herders,” he said.
He was confident that the ranch served would help distance animals from farmland, thus eliminating perennial conflict between herders and local farmers, which sometimes resulted in the destruction of property and loss of life.
Former President Mahama also paid a courtesy visit to the area’s supreme chief, Nana Akuoko Sarpong, at his Agogo palace.
Nana Akuoko Sarpong thanked the former president for the work he did as president between 2012 and 2016 and assured him of her support and that of the people of Agogo.
“I want to bless John and ask for grace for his life,” he said.
No skirt and blouse
In New Edubiase, where Mr. Mahama addressed another durbar, he asked people to desist from voting for “skirt and blouse”, which refers to a person who votes for different parties in parliamentary and presidential elections.
The former president said that when he was given the mandate on December 7, he would need a Parliament in which the NDC holds the majority of seats to properly execute his agenda of addressing rising unemployment, renewing business operations and restoring peace, security and harmony among Ghanaians.
Therefore, he appealed to supporters and supporters of the party to vote number two on the presidential and parliamentary ballots for him as president and all NDC parliamentary candidates.
