Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has said that former President John Dramani Mahama’s promise to abolish the dual track system that accompanied the Free SHS will disrupt the country’s education.
According to him, the two-way system is the basis of the Free SHS program, so any attempt to eliminate it prematurely will be more chaotic.
He said that it will not only affect the SHS Free policy but the entire educational system of the country.
During an interaction on the Citi Breakfast Show, he said that “that proposal will take us into a tailspin. It will destroy the upper secondary school as we know it. “
In an attempt to provide a more detailed explanation for his argument, Dr. Adutwum said; “Those students who are fit twos, all 1,000, will not fit into PRESEC. Then when the first year comes around, you will have to reduce tuition by a thousand. Basically, we have a 2000 student problem. Where do you send them? “
Adding that “If parents refuse to take the private school selection we are talking about, the dual track has been eliminated and parents do not like the schools they want their children to go to, there will be chaos in this country. “
However, he was quick to add that the government is consulting with stakeholders in the education sector to fade the dual track system in some schools that have hinted of a positive outlook in terms of infrastructure.
“For some schools, it will be faster. Even before the closure, there were about 15 schools that had pulled out of the dual track … by the time the new academic year begins, several schools will have pulled out of the dual track, ”he said.
The Free SHS policy was implemented in September 2017, shortly after the Akufo-Addo-led government took office.
