The family of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings has welcomed any decision to name the University of Development Studies (UDS) in his honor.
According to the family, he has never opposed such a “forward-looking” decision, so he welcomed the appointment of the institution on his behalf.
“We have quickly verified with your excellence and I have your authority to inform you that the family has never been against this prospective suggestion and we would have absolutely no objection if your university can achieve it,” said a family member and former diplomat, Mr. Victor Gbeho said on Monday when a delegation from the UDS, led by its vice chancellor, Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, visited the residence of the late Rawlings to commiserate with the family.
In response, Professor Teye said that the family’s statement had been noted and that the university had made a decision earlier in 2018 to do the honors, but something happened and it was suspended.
“So if you come closer at this time, we have already given our blessing and also say that the $ 50,000 that was donated (by Rawlings)… was intended to develop the university library and that is why the main library is now named after former president and if you go there you would see a statute of him in front of the library, “he said.
However, he said the university was ready for whatever decision the government made to name the UDS in his honor.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently urged the Governing Council of the University of Development Studies (UDS) to review its proposal to name the university after former President Jerry John Rawlings, who used the World Prize money of Food of $ 50,000 to establish the University.
Speaking at the 21st Congregation of the UDS on the Tamal Central Campus, President Akufo-Addo paid an enthusiastic tribute to the late former president and founder of the UDS, recognizing the pivotal role he had played in the establishment of the UDS.
Later, Professor Teye signed a condolence book opened in memory of the late Rawlings at his Ridge residence.
