Tottenham star Harry Kane has been called the ‘smartest footballer on the street in the Premier League’ by former Liverpool and England center-back Jamie Carragher.

The English international has enjoyed a brilliant start to the 2020-21 Premier League campaign, playing a pivotal role in guiding Tottenham to the top of the pile after nine games.

While Kane has already scored seven goals this season, he has taken his game to another level by also providing assists with an incredible nine to his name in as many games.

Kane received high praise on Saturday after Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Manchester City, producing the dirty work by tracking down, breaking the game and winning smart fouls in a brilliant overall display.

And Carragher has since hailed the Tottenham talisman for leading from the front as he takes on a new and fuller role with José Mourinho.

Carragher told Sky Sports: ‘I spoke about Harry Kane on this show a month ago about this new role and this new number 10.

“Harry Kane is by far the streetiest footballer in the Premier League and I love it, I love it.”

Carragher was strong in his defense of Kane amid diving accusations that have been thrown at him of late.

Kane has been taunted by taunting recently, and criticism came to light after he won a penalty against Brighton by ducking and allowing Adam Lallana to jump on him, fouling him.

But Carragher insists that the 27-year-old does not cheat, but is “really smart” at fouling.

He added: ‘And if someone after this piece tells me they are cheating or falling, they are not. It’s a huge part of the game and a really smart part of the game.

“It made the Manchester City defenders look really childish and naive without understanding football.”

Kane will be desperate to continue his fantastic form ahead of a crucial period of matches for Tottenham.

Tottenham face Chelsea, north London rivals Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Leicester in their next five Premier League matches.
