Reports in Spain claim Philippe Coutinho may have played his last game for Bayern Munich as he faces another six weeks away due to injury.
The Brazilian international has spent much of the Covid-19 lockdown recovering from an ankle injury after undergoing surgery late last month. A statement from Barcelona at the time confirmed that Coutinho had gone under the knife on April 24 and put a 14-day deadline on his rehabilitation period.
That window has already passed, and it looked like things had lined up neatly and orderly for Coutinho’s return when German football returns next weekend. However, things have rarely gone as planned for the 27-year-old in the past two years, and Mundo Deportivo is reporting another major setback that could prematurely end his loan period in Germany.
The Spanish media claims that there has been a complication in his recovery that will leave him unable to play for a minimum of six weeks.
Given that the plan for the Bundesliga is to wrap up the season on the weekend of June 27, within seven weeks, that new timeline would mean that there is a very real risk that Coutinho will return to Barcelona in the summer without adding to his 32 appearances for the Bavarian giants.
Coutinho is expected to remain at Bayern while he recovers, but the outlet does note that the situation could change, tentatively suggesting that the loan could be extended to allow him to participate in the Bayern Champions League campaign, which is planned to resume. August 7/8.
However, that eventuality seems unlikely at this stage, but there is little certainty about the football calendar as Europe’s big leagues struggle to end their national seasons.

France have already scaled back their campaign, but the rest of Europe’s top five leagues remain firmly determined to play their remaining matches. The League is looking to resume on June 20, while the Premier League and Serie A could follow soon after.
The delays could cause further disruption to Coutinho’s future beyond this summer, as Barcelona has yet to decide what to do with him. He has long been linked to a permanent departure, and although almost all Premier League teams with a little money in the bank (including Leicester and Everton) have thought about it, it has been reported that the Catalan club can give him the opportunity to relive his derailed career in Spain.
