On the whistle report
Atlético de Madrid achieved their first LaLiga victory over Barcelona in more than a decade Yannick Carrasco capitalized on a blunder by Barça goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to secure a 1-0 win in an empty Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday.
Belgian winger Carrasco broke the deadlock late in the first half, pulling out a graceful heel to slam the ball into Ter Stegen’s legs and maintain his composure in front of goal after the German left his area.
Atlético got the victory without joint top scorer Luis Suárez, who was deprived of a reunion with his former team after testing positive for covid-19, but they were more than worthy winners.
Marcos Llorente was about to give them an early lead when his shot crashed off the crossbar, while a brilliant save from Ter Stegen blocked Saúl Niguez from wide.
Barça captain Lionel Messi had a match to forget, creating very little danger, while former Atleti forward Antoine Griezmann missed the target in each half as the Catalans fell to a third defeat of the season, leaving them 10th in the table with 11 points.
Atlético climbed to second place in the standings, tied at 20 points with leader Real Sociedad.
