Real Madrid have confirmed that forward Luka Jovic has tested positive for coronavirus and will now miss the clash with Villarreal on Saturday.
Jovic was on international duty with Serbia this week and scored twice in Russia’s 5-0 defeat on Wednesday in Belgrade.
The forward also hit the mark in the last minute of his Euro 2020 play-off final loss to Scotland eight days ago in the Serbian capital to force extra time before seeing his team lose the penalty shoot-out.
In a statement released on Friday, the Spanish champion confirmed the positive reading of the player, who will not be able to train with his teammates since he isolates himself until he publishes a negative reading.
It said: ‘Real Madrid CF wants to inform that our player Luka Jovic has given a positive result in the Covid-19 tests carried out on Friday morning’.
Madrid feared that Jovic would produce a positive result when it was revealed that three of his international teammates Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Dorde Nikolic and Darko Lazovic, as well as a team physio, had also produced positive results.
The club has already been hit by a number of coronavirus infections this season, including Eden Hazard, Casemiro and Eder Militao in recent weeks, but all have recovered and are back in first team training.
But there will still be concerns about other stars, such as the Croatian Luka Modric, the Ukrainian Andriy Lunin and the Norwegian Martin Odegaard, who have been out with international teams that have produced positive results during this international break. However, none of the three players have produced any positive results.
In more frustrating news for the Spanish champions, it looks like they will be left without captain Sergio Ramos this weekend and their next Champions League clash with Inter Milan after he took a hit in Spain’s 6-6 win. 0 over Germany on Tuesday night.
Despite his form for Serbia, Jovic has had a frustrating start to the season in Spain, failing to score in five games in all competitions in which he has yet to complete 90 minutes under coach Zinedine Zidane.
With the return of LaLiga after the international break, fourth-placed Madrid travels to Villarreal in second place with one game less and could jump over their opponents to second place in the table with victory.
