Let’s start at the end: Sergio Ramos is going to extend his contract at Real Madrid.
It doesn’t matter when you read this. It doesn’t matter if there are 41 days until January 1, when I can negotiate with another club, or if you are reading this on December 27. As much as some insist on adding to the drama, this is a movie I’ve seen before and we know there is a happy ending.
Sergio Ramos is going to renew because both he and Real Madrid know they need each other and they will have to reach an agreement. After 15 years, they know each other too well. This is one of the few negotiations in which Florentino Pérez is directly involved, rather than observing it from a distance as he does with the majority. The president is a businessman and as such he is calm and unhurried.
Florentino knows that he cannot lose his captain. Ramos is an icon and a pillar of the winger who, approaching 35, maintains a very high level of performance. Ramos is fundamental for the team, he is a leader on and off the field and he would not be easily replaceable.
Unless Sergio Ramos’s demands are crazy
Ramos has his roots in Madrid. His whole life is there, he has a family and he doesn’t want to leave. What he does want, however, is to land the best possible contract, as in 2015, but he will not force his way as much as five years ago.
That works in favor of the club. His economic strength has been affected by the pandemic, but Ramos could argue that his performance justifies his initial demands to improve his 12 million euro salary. Whatever your new terms, the salary reduction will apply. That reduction, by the way, was achieved with the same ease as by the role of Ramos in the squad.
If Ramos is willing to negotiate his amount, the club will have to be willing to be more flexible in its position of not offering contracts of more than one year to older players. Ramos wants two seasons, with the option of a third depending on games, starts and other variables. Madrid, however, wants a year at the beginning with the option of a second. If it is agreed to fix one year and add another, the variables will be so easily achievable that they will almost guarantee the second year.
