Parliamentary candidates from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have pledged their full commitment to peace ahead of the December 7 elections.
Speaking at an event called “Ballots without bullets” organized by the National Commission for Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), both candidates reiterated the need for a campaign and elections free of violence so that Ghanaians continue to enjoy peace and stability.
NDC candidate James Kofi Annan advised his supporters to be law-abiding citizens and to desist from any violent behavior or act that would discredit the party’s name.
“I don’t want anyone who follows me to participate in acts of violence. You have to respect the law and commit to peace. The members of my party and I are committed to peace.
According to him, the development of a country depends on the peace and stability that accompany it.
The incumbent deputy of the electoral district, Mr. Alexander Afenyo Markin, also pledged to promote peace. Afenyo Markin, who has been a member of Parliament in that constituency since 2012, also asked his constituents, especially members of his party, not to engage in any violent behavior at the slightest provocation.
“I don’t think there is any other way for people to express their views besides the ballot box. Let me therefore say that I am committed to a peaceful election, “he said.
Speaking on behalf of the Small Arms Commission, Executive Secretary Mr. Jones Applerh revealed that the “Bullet Free Ballots” campaign is the Commission’s way of contributing to a non-violent election.
He stressed the need for Ghanaians to be tolerant of the views and opinions of others and not resort to violence at the slightest provocation.
Both candidates received plaques as a token of their commitment to peace before, during and after the elections.
The Bullet Free Ballots campaign is carried out in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program and the German Federal Foreign Office. It is a public education and awareness program to educate the public about the need for peaceful and violent free elections.
