Sergio Ramos has been ruled out for at least the next three games after sustaining a hamstring injury during Spain’s 6-0 rout of Germany.
Ramos becomes the last injured player in international service, and has now returned to the Spanish capital for further treatment.
Ramos’ hamstring problem means that the Real Madrid captain will miss his team’s upcoming matches against Villarreal, Inter Milan and Alavés.
Ramos, 34, slumped when Spain led 3-0 midweek and immediately told the bank he had a problem.
The news puts Madrid in a worrying situation, with matches piling up quickly and heading into the festive period.
Madrid face Villarreal, Inter, Alavés, Shakhtar Donetsk, Sevilla, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Atlético de Madrid before Christmas.
What’s more, the Spanish giants have been beaten in seven of their last eight Champions League games without Ramos on the team.
Earlier in the season, Madrid flopped in the groups without Ramos and suffered a humiliating defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk.
Last season, Zinedine Zidane’s squad was finally eliminated from the competition after Ramos was unable to play in the round of 16 against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
In other troubling news, Madrid’s Frenchman Raphael Varane has also returned from international duty with a shoulder complaint, meaning Madrid could still be without their first-choice central defensive partner.
However, Madrid has been boosted by the return of Eder Militao to training after testing negative for Covid-19.
Currently, Madrid is fourth in La Liga with 16 points after eight games, and third in Group B of the Champions League with four points, tied with Shakhtar and drifting from leader Borussia Monchengladbach.
