Around 2,180 children in Ghana have been revealed to have contracted the infectious disease from coronavirus.

This was in a research paper conducted by Child Rights International on children ages 0-18.

“National data shows that from March 11 to November 9, 2020, of the 49,202 who contracted the COVID-19 virus, 2,180 children under 18 years of age contracted the virus, which represents 4.43% of the rate total contraction in Ghana, ”he said.

The research indicated that most of the children who contracted the virus were asymptomatic and were not hospitalized.

“Most of them are girls, but if you also look at those who have died as a result of COVID, the majority are boys.

“So that is the perspective of the COVID situation in Ghana and what we have not determined is whether children have the capacity or are potential spreaders or transmitters of COVID to their age cohorts or the vulnerable,” he said.

The research titled The State of ‘Covid-19: The State of Children in Ghana’ used both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect data.

As the data collected sampled 589 communities, towns and cities, in addition to the national data on COVID-19 provided by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

Secondary data from other sources were included in the research.

The findings follow similar research conducted by the West African Center for Infectious Pathogens Cell Biology in collaboration with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

Their research shows that around 1.2 million Ghanaians living in Accra and Kasoa have been exposed to the infectious disease coronavirus.
