The Kerala Blasters kick off their Indian Super League (ISL) season on Friday when they take on ATK Mohun Bagan.
The Blasters have made wholesale changes to their foreign contingent with only midfielder Sergio Cidoncha retained from last season. Among the new players is Costa Nhamoinesu, who has been named among the three captains that are Cidoncha and Jessel Carneiro.
Coach Kibu Vicuña explained his reasons for handing over the captain’s armband for three players to share.
“For me it is important which player will be the representative of the team. These players have a chance to be good captains. They will be the representatives of the team.

“Being captain is not just about having the bracelet, it is about representing the team on and off the field. I like having three to four captains. Perhaps in the future we will add one more ”, said Vicuña.
Nhamoinesu is impressed with the talent of Kerala Blasters and believes that all players are eager to learn from Vicuña a new style of play that will capture the attention of Blasters fans.
“When I came here, I am not trying to choose individuals, I look at the team as a whole. All the youngsters are enthusiastic and full of energy, they really want to learn from the coach who is teaching a new style of play, ”said the 34-year-old.
The Coronavirus pandemic has affected the preparations of most of the teams, as they remain in a bio-bubble during the course of the campaign. Nhamoinesu was quick to point out that it is important to stay motivated and stay focused, especially during times of the pandemic.
“It is (this season) different from what we are used to. Now it’s all about the mental aspect. Physically it is demanding but now we must be mentally strong. We are not trying to make excuses, we will try to work with what is available to us.
“Yesterday we had some activity between us after dinner. Nobody knows what the future holds. We seek to work with what is available and we will see where it takes us, ”he shared his thoughts.
