The people rescued included 200 children and 411 adults.
This was contained in a presentation made by the minister when she took her turn at this week’s ‘Meet the Press pledge’ at the Ministry of Information.
She said that Ghana is currently in a Tier 2 ranking with the United States Department of Labor (DOL) level ranking, noting that Ghana is making a significant effort to combat human trafficking.
“The government has allocated ¢ 1 million to the Fund against Human Trafficking to effectively combat the threat by setting up two government shelters to provide care for rescued victims of human trafficking.”
According to the minister, the ministry has so far trained 45 law enforcement officers with the aim of developing their capacity to better assist in the fight against human trafficking in Ghana.
On the issue of public education, the minister said her team conducted a series of community dialogues and sensitizations in an effort to increase awareness and education about human trafficking and irregular migration.
She said this ultimately led to a reduction in the rate of human trafficking and its related activities in the country.
“As part of Blue Day, the Ministry embarked on an awareness campaign on social media about human trafficking.
“Ghana joined the world in commemorating the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (Blue Day) this year. This was to intensify our prevention mechanisms through awareness campaigns ”.
