Ms. Cynthia Mamle Morrison – Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection
Since 2019, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has rescued, supported and cared for more than 611 victims of Human Trafficking, while the shelter for adults in the period analyzed received 63 survivors of human trafficking.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ms Cynthia Mamle Morrison, said that of this number, 200 were children and 411 were adults.
The Minister made this known in this week’s Meet the Press pledge at the Ministry of Information on Wednesday, September 2, 2020.
Ms. Morrison said that Ghana is currently in a Tier 2 rating with the US Department of Labor (DOL) level rating.
He said this shows that Ghana is making a significant effort to combat human trafficking.
“The government has delivered one million Ghana cedis to the Fund Against Human Trafficking to effectively combat the threat by setting up two (2) government shelters to provide care for rescued victims of human trafficking,” he said. .
According to the minister, the ministry has so far trained 45 law enforcement officers with the aim of developing their capacity to better assist in the fight against human trafficking in Ghana.
On the issue of public education, the minister said her team conducted a series of community dialogues and sensitizations in an effort to increase awareness and education about human trafficking and irregular migration. She said this ultimately led to a reduction in the rate of human trafficking and its related activities in the country.
“As part of Blue Day, the Ministry embarked on an awareness campaign on social media about human trafficking. Ghana joined the world in marking this year’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (Blue Day). This was to intensify our prevention mechanisms through awareness campaigns ”.
Ms Morrison said the Ministry has organized a durbar for 75 traditional leaders from all regions of Ghana to sensitize them to the dangers associated with human trafficking.
