Just under 6,000 fires set different parts of Ghana ablaze in 2020, the Ghana National Fire Service revealed.

A year-end statement issued by Fire Chief Edwin Ekow Blankson said: “Available statistics from our records show fire outbreaks from January to December 21 of this year at 5,966, representing an increase of 4.9 percent in fire outbreaks compared to a figure of 5,673 in the same period in 2019 ”.

“This is the result of many domestic activities carried out by large numbers of people during the shutdown period in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic.”

He noted that “the last quarter of the year has been a great test and challenge for the Service, as we had to deal with the numerous fire outbreaks in some of our main markets and other areas with all available resources.”

“It is gratifying to note, however, that so far we have been able to weather the storm and bring some relief to the many people who were affected,” the statement added.

“It is my wish that all the fire safety tips that are published receive the necessary attention to help prevent unwanted fires, but if it does occur, please do not hesitate to call our emergency number, 112, as we have implemented an operation of nationwide Red Alert program that will see more men on hold 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ”the statement said.
