More than 60 Ghanaian lawmakers have defied an order from President Alban Bagbin to test for COVID-19.

He has expressed concern about the development and asked the other MPs to strictly adhere to security protocols, as some members have contracted the virus.

“My directive that all members take the COVID-19 test has not been followed by about 60 members of parliament. It is true that the Majority Leader has said that we are not all safe, even in the House some members are affected by COVID-19, ”said Bagbin.

He added: “You may not know who the person is due to the confidentiality protocol issue, we have not disclosed those who are now positive, but we do have some of us in that category.”

COVID-19 situation in Ghana

Ghana has recorded 13 more deaths from COVID-19 infections since the last update, bringing the total deaths to 390, as of January 25, 2021.

Active cases stood at 3,940 after 625 new cases were registered in six of the 16 regions.

Dr. Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service, who announced this at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, said the daily average number of cases was 600.

The country’s cumulative cases stood at 63,883 after more than 757,000 tests.

The GHS chief said he had stepped up contact tracing in all 16 regions, with 330 contact trackers in the Greater Accra region, which managed to reach 8,679 people.

Dr. Kumah-Aboagye expressed concern about the increase in infections in the workplace and urged managers of companies and public and private organizations to improve the observation of COVID-19 labels in different workplaces.

Dr. Kumah-Aboagye noted that “referral of patients to a public health laboratory for COVID-19 testing is free.”

He pleaded with the public to observe COVID-19 safety protocols in public places, including covering your mouth when coughing and sneezing, washing your hands with soap under running water, wearing masks or protectors, and using hand sanitizers frequently.

It ensured the determination of the Service to collaborate with the media in educating and raising public awareness about safety and prevention protocols.
