Six presidential candidates in the 2020 elections have asked the standard-bearer of the Democratic National Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, to accept the final results declared by the Electoral Commission or to seek legal redress.
This comes after the NDC leadership accused the EC of delivering what they describe as a stolen verdict.
Following this, some party supporters across the country have held outbreaks of protests to show their dissatisfaction with the final results declared by EC president Jean Mensa.
But at a press conference on Wednesday, Hassan Ayariga from the All People’s Congress (APC), David Apasera from the People’s National Convention (PNC), Ivor Greenstreet from the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Henry Herbert Lartey from the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) ), Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the independent candidate, Kwame Asiedu Walker, called for peace.
They insisted that the court is the only establishment that can annul the final results declared by the EC.
“We ask John Mahama that, although his refusal to accept the result is democratic, we implore him and his followers to undertake democratic processes. Yes, the protest is a form of democratic process, but it is indeterminate in the sense that you may not know what can happen during the demonstration, “Walker told the media.
Hassan Ayariga, for his part, said allegations of abuse by the military should be investigated.
Earlier today, some civil society organizations, including the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), have urged NDC leaders to seek legal redress due to their unwillingness to accept the outcome of the 2020 general elections. .
In his turn, Greenstreet said he considered it appropriate for the presidential candidates who disputed the elections to unite and add their voices to the non-political organizations that demand peace to reduce the tension that is spreading in the country.
“We want Ghana to be free and fair. So we call on all political party leaders, all presidential candidates and all Ghanaians to act with restraint and caution and to know that all Ghanaians must work for peace and that we need peace in Ghana, “he said. David Apasera during his speech.
On Wednesday, December 9, 2020, the officer returning from the 2020 polls called the election for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party.
Since then, NDC supporters have taken to the streets to express their displeasure.
They have vowed to protest until the EC revokes the declaration.
However, the party leadership has not publicly shown the way forward on the matter.
