531,705 candidates to write BECE

This year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will begin on September 14, with a total number of 531,705 candidates at 2,007 test centers across the country.

Data from the West African Examination Council (WAEC) made available to the Ghana News Agency indicated that 269,419 of the candidates are men and 262,286 women.

The Ashanti region presented the largest number of candidates: 106,857, of which 45,025 men and 52,832.

The Greater Accra region had 94,443 candidates, comprising 45,172 men and 49,271 women.

According to the data, the Central Region also presented 58,105 candidates with 29,467 representing men while women were 28,638.

The western and western northern regions had 54,432 candidates, including 26,373 women.

The data have the Eastern Region presenting 49,993 candidates made up of 25,749 men and 24,244 women.

The Bono, Anafi and Bono East regions also submitted 49,725 candidates, including 20,125 women.

The Volta and Oti regions also registered 38,192 candidates with 20,015 men.

Upper East also registered 22,532 candidates, including 11,775 women.

In the case of Upper West, 13,926 candidates with 7,000 men were registered.

According to the data, 17,440 schools with 18,716 supervisors participated.

The data indicated that supervisors and deputy supervisors were 2,007 and 1,719 respectively.

The exam will end on Friday, September 18, 2020.

Candidates will write English language, religious and moral education on Monday, integrated science, and basic design and technology on Tuesday.

Information and communication technology and French will be written on Wednesday with Ghanaian math, language and culture on Thursday, before ending with social studies on Friday.

An exam schedule issued to principals by WAEC confirmed that hearing and vision impaired candidates would receive an additional hour and a half of the time allotted to other candidates.

The BECE is used by the GES to select qualified candidates for secondary schools and technical institutes throughout the country.

Exam results are based on continuous evaluation and external examination with continuous evaluation making up 30 percent, while external examination, 70 percent of the total evaluation.
