Some fifty bright but needy students from the northern part of Ghana have benefited from the MTN Bright Scholarship Awards for their tertiary education.
The lucky students were selected after going through a rigorous selection process due to the large number of applicants for the award of the scholarship.
Awardees would benefit from MTN-Ghana tuition, room and board packages.
Presenting the awards to the students, MTN Corporate Services Executive Mr. Sam Koranteng congratulated them on being selected from among many candidates.
He explained that the initiative grew out of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of MTN in Ghana in 2016.
He mentioned that three hundred (300) people have benefited from the scheme since 2018, noting that from the initial low percentage of 18% of participation in the application process, popular female participation had currently reached 32%.
People with Disabilities (PWD), he continued, have also shown great interest in the application process, which he noted had been very rigorous.
Bright Scholarship award panel member Dr. Godwin Sabutey noted the rigorous nature of the process that led to the determination of the 100 people (50 each from the northern and southern parts of the country) in Ghana who qualified for the award.
Of the applications from 1,900 people in the 16 regions of the country, the panel member said a lot of scrutiny was involved to reach the 184 applicants who were shortlisted.
Addressing the participants at the event, Mr. Simon Osei Mensah, Ashanti Regional Minister praised MTN Ghana for the educational initiative.
He noted that within a few years, the stories would be replete with MTN for the opportunity it provided for people who were bright but needy to obtain a higher education.
The Minister commissioned the recipients to take the opportunity offered by the MTN Bright Scholarship award to study hard and excel in the courses they were taking at the school.
