The 4th Ghana Energy Awards (GEA) have honored worthy personalities and companies from the country’s energy sector.
At the climax of the event, Bui Power Authority CEO Fred Oware took home the prestigious title of Energy Personality of the Year, and PURC’s Mami Dufie-Ofori was awarded the coveted Female Energy Personality of the Year.
Volta River Authority Executive Director, Eng. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, emerged as CEO of the year in the energy subsector while GOIL Managing Director Kwame Osei Prempeh topped the oil category.
Chaired by the Akwamumanhene of the Akwamu Traditional Area, Odenefo Kwafo Akoto III, GEA 2020 was attended by various government representatives, various heads of organizations and institutions in the sector.
Economic Counselor of the United States Embassy, Hagen Maroney; The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Ghana, Kim Sungsoo, as well as Dorothee Dinkelaker from the German Embassy; Arndt Wierheim, Director of KFW and Vanessa Eidt, Portfoliomanager of KFW were present to honor the occasion.
Dr. Kwame Ampofo, Chair of the GEA Awards Panel noted that the awards scheme was “instituted to recognize the hard work of industry professionals and reward outstanding individuals for meritorious service to the country and its people.”
He said that the choice of the theme for the event: “Standing out in crisis: the energy sector in a COVID-19 era”, was to highlight the “difficult and uncertain physical, emotional and traumatic environment caused by the pandemic that companies, including companies of the energy sector has had to deal with and start our country “.
In a speech read on his behalf, Energy Minister John-Peter Amewu expressed his appreciation for the resilience of industry stakeholders.
He said that the war against COVID-19 in the energy sector has been waged jointly by the government and the private sector with complementary efforts. This link, he said, has led to the achievements being celebrated.
He pointed to the poignant interventions made by the government in terms of debt service among utility companies, subsidies to electricity bills, updating the transmission grid and the proliferation of renewable energy projects throughout the country.
The 4th Ghana Energy Awards also included several honorary awards for various efforts to combat the pandemic.
These included the Outstanding Initiative Award that went to the Private Sector Fund led by Senyo Hosi, CEO of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors; Outstanding Covid-19 working group received by the VRA; Women in Energy Award to Harriet Amissah-Arthur from Arthur Energy Advisors; Osagyefo Young Leadership Award to Michael Bozumbil, CEO of PETROSOL and Exemplary Leadership Award to Senyo Hosi, CEO of CBOD.
The Ministry of Energy received the Special Recognition Award for the Government Recovery Program and Free Electricity during Covid-19. TMG was also honored for its outstanding contribution to rural electrification, while the Energy Commission received the Impact for leadership in energy policy, and Total Petroleum Ghana received the honor for excellence in the adoption of ICT for the prevention of Covid- 19.
The Covid-19 HSSE recognition went to Ghana Gas, while the Ghana Electricity Company received the Outstanding Project to Combat Covid-19 for the construction of the Pantang Treatment Center.
The Lifetime Achievement Award of the Ghana Energy Awards 2020 was awarded to Kweku Andoh Awotwi, Chairman of the VRA Board.
