41% of women in politics have suffered gender violence – Survey

On Tuesday, December 1, 2020, the Gender Center for Development Empowerment (GenCED) launched a research report on “Violence against women in political parties”.

The research, which covered the operations, structures and processes of Ghana’s main political parties (NDC, NPP, CPP, PNC, PPP), revealed some issues that hamper political processes and governance of women in Ghana.

According to the report, of one hundred (100) women interviewed during the survey, 44% have experienced verbal violence at some point, 50.8% have suffered emotional / psychological violence and 23.7% have suffered sexual violence in their political life Until now.

The survey also indicated that 69%, however, have never faced any of these forms of gender-based violence in the political space yet.

The event, which was attended by representatives of the main political parties, was a sign of acceptance and solidarity for the work carried out by GenCED.
