A total of 3,510 security personnel have been deployed to the Central Region to ensure public order during the General Elections on December 7.

The number comprises the Police, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Office of National Investigations, prisons and some staff members of the 64th Military Regiment, among other security services, with a mandate to ensure peaceful elections.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Irene Oppong, a regional public relations officer for the Ghana Police Service, revealed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Cape Coast.

He said all the logistics and equipment had been provided to help the staff perform their duties.

DSP Oppong said their top priority was to provide security for everyone, including Election Commission officials, electoral agents, the electorate and citizens in general, adding that they remain committed to maintaining peace and order, before, during and after the elections.

He said that in addition to the joint mobile operations team that would be ready to assist any electoral college or constituency in need of assistance, military personnel have also been assigned to certain polling stations identified as high risk areas.

The enthusiasm and zeal we have shown today demonstrate our readiness to execute our mandate in a professional manner. This is not the time to show our preference for any game, our preference is Ghana, ”he said.

“I want to assure the public that we will be impartial in dealing with wrongdoers to ensure peace because that is our duty and that is what we have been called to do.”

Deputy Police Commissioner (DCOP) Habiba Twumasi-Sarpong, the Regional Police Commander, noted that the peace and security of the country were in the hands of security personnel and challenged them to show that they are up to the task.

He expressed the hope that the country will remain peaceful and united after the elections.

The Regional Commander urged security personnel to remain neutral and to carry out their duties professionally.
