Ghana, as part of the activation of the emergency through the Partnership Agreement, has identified 32 welders from the North, East, West, Northeast, Oti and Central regions who will be trained to manufacture innovative and easy-to-use hand washing facilities. .

A main approach used to prevent and minimize the spread of COVID-19 in Ghana is to wash hands with soap regularly, so hand washing devices and technology have become essential.

In Ghana, popular hand washing technologies for hand washing are Veronica buckets and tippy faucets, however, innovations have become necessary in COVID-19 and many more innovative technologies have emerged.

The nine-day workshop was held in the northern region’s Yendi municipality, which eventually witnessed the manufacturing or various innovative hand-washing facilities by the participants at the end of the training.

In his closing remarks, Nathaniel Adams Junior (Jnr), Executive Director (CEO) of RWDP, Ghana, said that participants were led through the rudimentary procedures on how to draw up basic designs or drawings of hand washing facilities, how to interpret the drawing and how extension equipping them to be able to pay for the necessary materials for the final product.

He explained that RWDP Ghana was a worldwide Churches of Christ Social Service Organization, with Ghana being the West African Mission of the United States of America (USA) as its main funding organization.

He said that RWDP, Ghana has been operating in the water and sanitation sector across the country for 33 years and has drilled more than 1,600 wells across the country.

He said his partnership with UNICEF had lasted nearly two decades and had seen them drill more than 200 mechanized wells, build educational and domestic latrines, and offer technical training for handpump craftsmen and water system caretakers and form water and sanitation committees, water joints. in community-level water facility management to improve the operation and maintenance of sustainable water facilities.

He said that during the training, the cost of the facilities was emphasized to be affordable, easy to use for the physically disabled, and durable to help fight COVID-19.

He said that RWDP Ghana recognized UNICEF for technical and financial support to ensure the training workshop, which was a success and the support of NBSSI through its excellent business model facilitation was also recognized and appreciated.

The CEO reminded the artisans to make follow-up follow-up visits to make sure they put what they learned into practice during their training workshop.

Ms. Margaret Gwada, UNICEF Field Office Head, Tamale thanked the governments of the Netherlands, Canada and Japan for their support of the program and thanked RWDP, Ghana and NBSSI for the successful training program for participants.
