The most senior member of Parliament’s Finance Committee says that while the Akufo-Addo-led administration prides itself on a robust economy, the three-week blockade to curb the spread of the coronavirus has exposed Ghana’s crisis economy.

Cassiel Ato Forson in an interview in the Joy FM main article on Monday, noted that after three weeks of closure in some parts of the country, numerous citizens, investors and employers are experiencing a severe effect of the so-called robust “economy”.

“Now companies are struggling, employers are laying off staff, and there is little or no sign that people will receive their wages.

“But this not only exposes inequality in our system, it also exposes the” supposed “robustness of our economy to the extent that we had very little to pay our public debt,” he said.

His comments come after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia touted President Akufo-Addo’s management of the economy even in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, in response to former President John Mahama, who criticized the government’s handling of the crisis .

“We have been able to perform much better in the situation we inherited. In fact, the data makes this very clear. So my humble advice to former President Mahama is to take a look at the data before you speak, otherwise you will end up embarrassing yourself, ”said Dr. Bawumia.

But Mr. Forson said he was surprised to hear the Vice President make such political statements in a time of global emergency.

For the deputy of the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency, Dr. Bawumia should highlight the initiatives implemented by his administration to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable people in the country.

“The government has announced a mega stimulus package. [GHS600million]However, there is no plan on how to access the stimulus.

“Instead of him talking about precise policies implemented, he’s coming out with numbers like this, showing that the government is not concerned,” he emphasized.

He promised to “take a look” at the data that the Vice President is talking about and to respond accordingly.

However. Vice President Spokesman Dr. Gideon Buako on the same programs said there is nothing wrong with Dr. Bawumia’s political statements.

According to him, the NDC opposition standard-bearer has capitalized on the coronavirus pandemic to make political statements as well.

“And this year, being an electoral year, the ruling PNP should not be debatable so that the opposition throws dust in the eyes of the people.

“When you have an opposition leader, and even more so, one who has been president before, but does not recognize that these are not normal times, but is dedicated to politics, we will not let that act of the opposition be infected, to get to a point that you can’t control, ”he said.
