The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has fired 28 staff members, including two women, for unprofessional acts.
This was due to complaints made by the public, of which they were found guilty of 181 cases of unprofessional conduct, from January to August 2020.
The Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service, Police Superintendent, Sheila Kessie Abayie-Buckman, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, described some of the misconduct as insubordination, drunkenness while on duty and involvement in business. part-time out of the Service without permission.
Others were the negligent permission of an inmate to escape legal custody, failure to enter official documents, misuse of firearms, and absence from duty without permission.
Superintendent Abayie-Buckman said the officers affected were from the ranks of sheriff to assistant police commissioner; “Agent, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Superintendent, Chief Superintendent and Deputy Commissioner of Police.”
During the investigations, 151 of the reported cases were determined to be partially true and, apart from the 28 officers who were fired, some had their ranks reduced, he said.
Superintendent Abayie-Buckman said that in 2019, of the 291 complaints filed against police officers, 191 were found guilty.
He said disciplinary actions were taken to maintain high standards of professionalism in the Service.
On the positive side, several staff members, including 43 from Headquarters, were praised for their exemplary conduct between January and August 2020, he said.
“The Police Administration is making efforts to educate men and women about the need to exhibit professionalism at all times,” he said.
“The Service will not protect any personnel who misbehave in the performance of their duty to discredit the name of the Service.”
He urged the public not to hesitate to expose the misconduct of any police personnel by reporting to the appropriate rooms, adding that they should not only condemn the police when they miss their mark, but also praise those who performed their duties in such a manner. professional.
