Nene Kwaku Agblorm II, a traditional ruler and 26 others suspected of being secessionists have been charged with treason.

It is said that the suspects had on September 25 of this year in the Volta Region, prepared to carry out an act and an illicit enterprise to usurp the executive powers of the Republic.

In an amended charge sheet, they also face charges of conspiracy, participation in the campaign of a prohibited organization, namely western Togo, conspiracy to cause illegal harm, cause illegal harm, theft, gun disturbances.

The Court did not read the charges and facts to the accused.

This prompted various arguments from seven lawyers representing some of the defendants as to why the police were in court and on what charges.

According to the various lawyers, their clients had not been well fed while in custody and some of the accused had serious health problems as they had been denied the right to take their medication.

According to the lawyers, his clients were mostly those who earned their families’ living. The lawyers prayed for the court to admit their clients on bail so they could seek medical attention, adding that they would not hamper the investigations.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvester Asare informed the Court that he had no jurisdiction to grant bail to the defendants following the new charges.

ASP Asare said that the Police had complied with the orders of the Court, including the access of the accused to their lawyers and relatives.

According to the prosecution, the Police had also been taking some of the defendants who suffered gunshot wounds to the hospital.

The court chaired by Mrs. Rosemary Baah Torsu, in its ruling, declined bail, saying that it also lacked jurisdiction to grant it, and postponed the matter until 9 November.

In a related incident, 51 alleged secessionists were fired by the court. However, shortly after their discharge, they were arrested again and charged with serious crimes of treason, among others.

The 51, who were placed in preventive detention, will reappear on November 4.
