The Ghana Police Service arrested 26 people among the protesters near the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) headquarters in Accra on Thursday 17 December.

Protesters, mainly supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were reported to have packed the main streets leading to the Commission’s headquarters and burned car tires, threw stones and thus caused heavy vehicular traffic and congestion.

The police, however, managed to disperse the crowd “using a non-lethal riot control management approach and arrested twenty-six (26) protesters in the process.”

The party has been protesting the results of the December 7 elections, which it claims declared itself in favor of the current New Patriotic Party (PNP).
A press release issued by DSP Effia Tenge of the Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit said that all suspects are being taken through due process and provisionally warned of crimes of illegal assembly, holding special events without notice and obstruction.

“The culprits will be prosecuted,” the statement said.

He advised the public to adhere to the principles of the 1994 Public Order Law (Law 491) by duly notifying the police prior to planned demonstrations.
