The Supreme Committee on Delivery and Legacy (SC) has announced that the inauguration of the stadium located in Al Rayyan will take place on December 18, 2020, the National Day of Qatar exactly two years before the country will host the World Cup final. from FIFA.
It is the latest milestone on the road to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.
The SC also announces that the impressive new venue will host the Amir Cup final between Al-Arabi and Al-Sadd, which will also be played on Qatar National Day on December 18, 2020.
The stadium that will become the new home of Al Rayyan Sports Club is the fourth of the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament to open after the Khalifa International, Al Janoub and Education City stadiums.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the venue would host seven matches from the group stage to the knockout stage during the World Cup.
The 40,000-seat stadium is adjacent to the Mall of Qatar and within walking distance of Al Riffa Station on the Doha Metro Green Line.
The most striking feature of the stadium is a resplendent façade, made up of patterns that characterize different aspects of Qatar: the importance of family, the beauty of the desert, the native flora and fauna, and local and international commerce.
A fifth form, a shield, brings together all the others, representing the strength and unity that is particularly relevant to the city of Al Rayyan.
HE Hassan Al Thawadi, SC Secretary General, said:
“The opening of this stadium is another important milestone on the road to 2022. This impressive venue and the surrounding venue will leave a fantastic legacy for Al Rayyan Sports Club and all who live in this proud city.”
“This event also marks the two-year countdown to the most important match in Qatari history – the final of the FIFA World Cup,” added Al Thawadi.
“We are proud that our preparations for the World Cup remain on track, with 90% of infrastructure projects completed.
“We look forward to opening more stadiums next year as we ensure that all tournament venues are handed over well before the big start.”
Engineer Hilal Al Kuwari, president of SC’s Technical Delivery Office, described the completion of the stadium as a major achievement on the way to the first ever FIFA World Cup to be held in the Middle East and the Arab World.
“Five stadiums have been completed, including Khalifa, Al Janoub, Education City, Al Bayt and Al Rayyan. The remaining three will be delivered in the near future to give us enough time to test our operational plans,” Al Kuwari expressed.
“The successful delivery of the stadium at Al Rayyan on time and on budget is testament to the outstanding collaboration of the SC team, our many contractors and valued stakeholders.
“We are very excited to inaugurate this venue on Qatar’s National Day, exactly two years before everyone turns to our country for the World Cup final.”
Considerable sustainability and efficiency measures have been incorporated into the design to reduce the stadium’s carbon footprint, including the use of recycled building materials and the retention of trees from the surrounding environment.
Many of the recycled materials used in the new stadium complex come from the deconstructed Ahmed Bin Ali stadium that once occupied the site.
As a result, the stadium received the following ratings from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS): GSAS Design and Construction Certification (four-star rating), GSAS Construction Management Certification (Class A *) and an Index of GSAS Seasonal Energy Efficiency (SEER) Certificate of Conformity.
“The construction of this stadium, which incorporated the careful deconstruction of the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium and the reuse of materials from that structure in the new project, is an outstanding achievement for the SC,” said engineer Yasir Al Jamal, SC vice president. Technical Delivery Office.
“From the beginning, sustainability was at the forefront of this project, amid the unique challenges we faced during development. I am very proud of the SC team and our valued stakeholders in providing this exceptional location.”
After Qatar 2022, the modular upper level of the stadium will be phased out, and the seats will be reused in sports facilities in Qatar and abroad.
The surrounding compound will also be transformed into a regional sports center, where local inhabitants will have the opportunity to experience many other sports facilities emerging as part of the complex.
Six soccer training grounds, a cricket pitch, a riding track, a cycle track, fitness equipment and a running track are just a few of the facilities that the Al Rayyan community can hope to use.
More details on the Amir Cup final, including ticket, travel and social distancing requirements, will be communicated in due course.
